Transferring Your Domain

Your domain name is a valuable resource and as such registrars employ different ways of protecting or locking your domain from being transferred out of your ownership or control.  While this is great in unauthorised requests, it does prove troublesome when you 'really do' want to transfer the control of your domain to another service provider.

Each domain registrar uses a slightly different process but they all follow common guidelines.  These basically mean that you can't just change registrar when you want, you need to explicitly confirm agreement to a request first.

A way of confirming this is to use a 'Special Key' (EPP) generated for this purpose by the existing registrar.

Normally you make the request for 'The Key' by loging into your current registrar's panel and selecting the appropriate option.  The 'Key' will then be sent to the email address held on file of the Registrant.

Transfer Task Step 1: Verify that the domain name is eligible for transfer

To make sure your domain name can be transferred, check the following:

  • The domain name has been registered for at least 60 days, and has been at your current registrar for at least 60 days.
  • The domain name is not in "client update prohibited" status.

Transfer Task Step 2: Confirm contact information

Before you can transfer a domain, the Registrant and Administrative contact information must be up-to-date because it is these contacts who receive the transfer request and okay the transfer.

Transfer Task Step 3: Obtain the authorization code

Some TLDs require that you provide an authorization code for your domain name, to provide an extra level of assurance that the transfer request comes from an authorized source.  Depending on your registrar there will be an option to either generate and copy this code or have this code sent to the contacts by email.

Transfer Task Step 4: Unlock the domain

Before you can transfer a domain away from a registrar, the domain must be unlocked. Locking is a feature most registrars offer to prevent unauthorized transfers (hijacking) of domains.

SPECIAL NOTE: To generate your EPP code some registrars will require Step 4: to be performed before Step 3:

Transfer Task Step 5: Transfer the domain name

Once you have prepared the domain name at your registrar you're ready to transfer them to eNom which is the registrar used by Tendring.NET.  Your registrar may have FAQ's that assist you in how thier process integrates with Enom proceeses which our control panel work with.

We suggest you raise a support ticket sooner rather than later if you are in doubt.

Transferring Out:

Why you would want to transfer your domain away from us we would like to ask but it's not difficult for you to do.

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Go to your Domains section
  3. Select Edit for the domain you want to move
  4. Check the status of your Registrar Lock
  5. Request EPP in the management section.

The rest will happen automagically.

General Notes:

It can take up to seven days, sometimes, to transfer a domain anywhere, sometimes it may be lots quicker.

When dealing with registrars patience is a virtue.  Remember that some 'automagic' secure processes may run only once an hour and sometimes longer. Just because you updated your preference in one section does not guarantee another section will be updated.  Sometimes you will see confirmation an action has taken place but where section data has not been updated the action may be queued or dropped because something else is happening  (ask a programmer :)

One cause of fustration is the time between removing a registrar lock and the registrars security process validating it.  Until the correct processes are verified the next action can't proceed and may need to be requested again.

As a general rule of thumb the majority of problems come back to checking the status of your registrar locks.  If they have been right for 12 hours then it's time to recheck everything is really correct and up to date in the domain contact details.  If everything (especially the email address) is correct and you still can't get your EPP code after 24 hours there's a real problem or the minimum 60 day rule applies.
